Week 10, 2010: Almost Week 11, Too Much Time in ACC Country

Well, I just returned from ACC country (North and South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida). I was in Charlotte and noticed the advertising for the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte, that featured the prominent subheading "ACC VS. BIG EAST." Seems like this season, based on the performances of those two conferences, ACC versus Big East should be the fine print under "Featuring Two Bowl Eligible Teams!"

The Meineke Car Care Bowl selects fifth of bowls selecting from the ACC and third pick from selecting from the Big East. Pinch me! Maybe even Meineke has had enough, this is their last season as sponsor. I recommend making it the
"Mert's Heart and Soul Bowl." Mert's is a fun place to get some southern cuisine in uptown Charlotte.

As we go into Week 10 of the college season, we welcome Stanford for the first time this season into the tournament projections, and the return of LSU. The current projections offer an interesting note, for this early in the process. None of the ten teams are projected to play one another for the rest of the season. So these ten teams control their own destiny, keep winning, and they are in the tournament. For instance, last season, Alabama and Florida were at the top of the seedings, but we knew one would lose in the SEC final game, and have to drop, unless it was some quintuple overtime game.

And one wonders if by some crazy way, Florida will wind up back in the tourney. If they win their SEC East, then play Auburn, maybe by then without Cam Newton, perhaps the Gators aren't done after all.

With Stanford coming into the projections, and knowing that their high IQ's may help them from overlooking opponents to succumb to late season upset fever, possible "worst case scenarios" for the tournament organizers may wake them up with a cold sweat infested nightmarish gasp. Imagine the semi-finals in St Pete getting Oregon, Stanford, Boise State, and Pitt. The ticket scalpers will have a lovely feast consuming unwanted tickets of teams not known for "traveling well" (although Boise State does well with what they have).

So, to the projections, that will be out of date tomorrow!
